Here's an article about rapping in Shenzhen. It's probably my favorite story that i've worked on yet. I interviewed four different local rappers, all of whom were interesting and quite different from each other. Part three of my hip hop series will come out two weeks later, and will look at the DJ culture in Shenzhen. The photo you see above is of Jimminem, my former stu...Read more
My friend Darcy just wrote an article about graffiti in Shenzhen. From this, I got the idea to do a four part series about hip hop culture in Shenzhen, covering the four basic elements: graffiti, rapping, djing, and breakdancing. The part about rapping will come out on Thursday. Hip hop is a...Read more
Of all the travel pages I have written, this one is the most poorly designed. I was also not so happy that the main photograph was cropped to exclude the city, which was one of the main points: to show that Shunde has a bit of everything. Oh well, no big deal. I've been to Shunde twice, and its always interesting. Check it out if you ever have the chance or inclination.
Here's a review I did for the Food & Drink page several days ago. I've been going to this restaurant regularly now for about one year. It's certainly not the best place around, but the food is good and the staff is always friendly. Recommended. Here is a photo gallery...Read more
Wrote a travel page in today's paper about this cool little village (foreground) in downtown Shenzhen. So amazing that it still exists, considering the development binge Shenzhen has always been on. I've been going to the village for two years now on photo excursions and at this point the villagers definitely know who I am. The picture above is one that i wanted to make the page,...Read more
I've been wanting to publish something like this for a while now, and it finally happened today. Night photography is my favorite, and Shenzhen is a great place to take night photos. The picture you see above was taken on the roof of my apartment (33rd floor) two years ago, and overlooks Dongmen and of course that's Diwang in the distance. I'd go up almost every night to ga...Read more
Published a photo highlights page in today's paper about the Canadian guys working in the skate park at Happy Valley. They are really nice, and seriously talented. I love the fact that I can often choose my own topics and stories - creative freedom is one of the best parts about this job.
Took my first trip to the top floor skydeck of Diwang last week! Went there on assignment to shoot the president of the 2011 Universiade, which resulted in this mediocre picture in the paper. But I stuck around afterwards to shoot the city. Too bad I couldn't stay all the way through sunset. Here's a Read more
Just wrote a Travel page about surfing in Shenzhen. It may come as a surprise, that yes, there is surfing here - and sometimes it's really good! Unfortunately, the page designer didn't use any pictures of someone actually surfing, so above we have 14 yr old Petra Sracar of the Czech Republic, who came in 2nd place in last year's China Surf Open! This was one of those big staged official pompous events with tons of Chinese photographers from all the other Shenzhen media - nothing to get excited about as a photographer. However, this time it was a bit different. Tsingdao was apparently a sponsor because everyone in attendance (mostly migrant workers) was provided with free beer. It wasn't long before the other photographers started handing cans of beer to me, and we all started throwing them down together...Read more
