The other night I tried to go to see 'Connected' but the good seats were sold out, so my friend and I went to see 'Painted Skin' (畫皮).
I'm not a fan of 'horror' films, but I knew it had an all-star cast - Donnie Yen, Zhou Xun, Zhao Wei and Sun Li. I guessed by the fact that Donnie was in it, that it would have at least a bit, if not a healthy dose of martial arts action to keep me entertained between 'horror' scenes. :-P
Actually it turns out its not really a horror movie at all, its more like a 'supernatural mystery thriller' set in ancient China. More like an X-files episode, except Mulder and Scully are Donnie and Sun Li. :-P
It keeps you entertained, the action and special effects aren't bad. The performances are pretty decent too, especially Zhou Xun (because she's Zhou Xun!) big end finale drags on a bit too long for my taste... but otherwise pretty solid.
Worth watching on DVD if you can't catch it in the theater. I give it a 7/10.
ps - I never saw the 1992 version w/ Sammo and Joey Wang, but I think the story is a bit different.
